The Pinellas county
teen authors' competition
The Schork~Munsell Artists’ Renaissance Collaborative (SM-ARC, inc.) is pleased to announce the launch of its first young adult literacy initiative, the Tampa Bay Teen Authors’ Competition. In its inaugural year, Teen Authors will be soliciting submissions from area youth to present to a blind jury for selection of five prize-winning pieces of writing in three categories—general fiction, comedy, & essay/non-fiction. Seven runners up will also be selected for honorable mention.
Who applies? Tampa Bay area teens aged 15-17 at the time of submission, residing in Pinellas county, are qualified to submit to Teen Authors. Each applicant may submit up to three pieces of writing in any or all categories, each piece not to exceed 2500 words. Applicants will need an adult sponsor (teacher, advisor, parent, guardian) to submit a letter of recommendation and accompany winning applicants to awards presentations & related events. There is no fee for applying. *Students in home-schools are private schools are welcome to participate. **Applicants with multiple submissions will only be recognized for their best work; no single party will be issued more than one award.
Who judges? SM-ARC, inc., will be soliciting a volunteer jury from within the Tampa Bay community, including educational professionals, politicians, journalists, representatives of the public library system, and SM-ARC board members. *For exceptionally large volumes of submissions, judges me be asked to specialize their area of interest to only one of the three categories.
What are the prizes? SM-ARC, inc., is currently seeking private & professional sponsors in the Tampa Bay community to develop a pool of generous rewards. Our current projections, subject to increase as more revenue is generated for this project, is as follows:
General fiction comedy essay/non-fiction
1st prize $1000.00 $1000.00 $1000.00
2nd prize $750.00
3rd prize $500.00
We are also actively soliciting in-kind donations from book stores, art & office supplies, and other businesses to create exciting gift baskets for cash prize winners & runners up. Additionally, all participants, regardless of award status, will be provided with a letter of recommendation from our board members or interested jurors for college applications. Each winning participant will be recorded reading their winning entry, for distribution on youtube.
Finally, the publishing division at SM-ARC, inc., will be editing & collating the entries of award winners & runners up into a professionally published anthology titled Tampa Bay Young Authors, Vol.I, for distribution on amazon.com & through area book sellers & libraries. *While SM-ARC, inc., will retain full rights to the anthology, each young author will retain full rights to their own submission.
Where? Awards will be given on a date to be determined; proposed venues include the Annual Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading, or an independent event.
